Main Terminal at AAX: one small building, one airline

Two or three Azul flights a day run through the Main Terminal at Romeu Zema Airport (AAX), all on regional aircraft serving Brazilian domestic routes. Everything happens in this single building: check-in, security, departures and arrivals. There’s no domestic vs international split and no need to think about terminal changes or long walks between gates.

Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras is the only scheduled carrier here, so every check-in counter and boarding gate is for Azul flights. With such a low flight volume, lines usually stay short, especially outside the first morning departure and late-afternoon bank. Still, show up 60–75 minutes before your flight, since staffing can be lean and one delayed departure can back things up.

The Main Terminal sits right next to the apron at Araxá, so walking time from check-in to the aircraft stairs is often under 5 minutes. Boarding is typically done via stairs directly from the tarmac, not jet bridges, so plan for rain or heat while you’re outside. Ground handling follows basic Brazilian regional-airport style: buses are rare, and you usually walk straight out from a single exit door.

Food is essentially a bring-your-own situation: no catalogued restaurants, branded coffee chains, or fast-food counters operate in this terminal. If a small snack bar is open on your day, expect basic items like coffee and packaged snacks, not full meals. For anything more substantial, eat in Araxá city before heading the roughly 5–7 km to the airport.

There are no lounges in the Main Terminal at AAX, so no Priority Pass, Azul lounge, or partner facility to fall back on. Seating in the gate area handles the passenger load for a single regional flight, and power outlets can be limited, especially near boarding time. Download shows and charge devices in town or at your previous airport; don’t count on lounge-style comforts here.

Retail is also minimal: no catalogued shops, duty free, or branded convenience stores operate in this terminal. If you need SIM cards, travel-sized toiletries, or last-minute gifts, handle those in Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, or another hub before connecting into Araxá. At AAX, expect maybe a basic kiosk at most, and only during peak flight times.

Ground transport is straightforward but not heavily structured: taxis and local cars cover the short 5–7 km link between the Main Terminal and central Araxá. Rideshare coverage can fluctuate by time of day, especially around the first and last Azul flights. Build 20–25 minutes into your schedule from hotel door to check-in counter, including the drive and a short wait for a car.

There’s no security maze here: one small checkpoint handles all departing passengers for the Main Terminal. With only Azul operating, security opens around the first departure and can close after the last, so don’t arrive extremely early expecting facilities to be running. The upside is speed: once security opens for your flight, you’re usually through in under 10 minutes.

Practical tip: treat Romeu Zema Airport like a bare-bones regional field and pack accordingly—bring snacks, a water bottle (fill it before security in town), and a fully charged power bank to cover the entire time you’re in the Main Terminal.
