30–35 minutes from AAP to Samarinda city by rail
APT Pranoto Express is the airport train linking Aji Pangeran Tumenggung Pranoto International Airport (terminal 1) with Samarinda city in about 30–35 minutes. Trains run on a fixed timetable, so it feels more predictable than hunting for a car in the pickup lane at peak times.
A one-way ticket on APT Pranoto Express is around IDR 50,000, paid at the station counter or machines near the platform. That fare is usually cheaper than a solo taxi across the 20+ km into town, especially in bad traffic or late at night when some drivers push for higher rates.
Trains depart roughly every 30 minutes, so you rarely stare at the board for long. Still, if your flight lands at 10:00, expect to be on a train anytime between about 10:30 and 11:00 once you clear immigration, grab bags, and walk the few hundred meters to the airport rail platform.
The airport station sits landside at AAP, outside terminal 1’s arrivals area, so you don’t go through security to reach it. From baggage claim, follow signs for "Train" or "Rail" for around 5–10 minutes on foot, depending on how fast you move and how heavy your bags are.
On board, the seating is basic but fine for a sub-40-minute ride, and luggage racks can handle a standard 23 kg checked suitcase plus a carry-on. Toilets on short airport trains in Indonesia sometimes go out of order, so use the restrooms near baggage belt numbers before walking to the platform if you care about that.
Trains can bunch around full flight banks, for example when two or three jets land between 08:00 and 09:00, so you might stand for a few stops if you board late. If you’re traveling with kids or two 20+ kg bags, line up 5–10 minutes before departure time for a better shot at seats together.
Plan your timing backward from the half-hour frequency: aim to reach the airport station about 10–15 minutes before the next scheduled train so you’re not watching the doors close while you’re still buying that IDR 50,000 ticket.
